3.) Tell us about a local news story that's all the buzz right now in your neck of the woods.
Well first off, I'm no where near the woods...I'm as city as it gets! I live in a town literally 3 minutes from downtown Boston! Here in my town, we house a large portion of the states transportation system. Logan International Airport is my backyard- no joke...the airport's THAT close! We also have the multi million dollar Ted Williams Tunnel and the horrendous Summner/Callahan Tunnel here...
The aforementioned Ted Williams Tunnel was part of an over budget and over scheduled Big Dig Project that was supposed to move the city's ugly green highways under ground so that they could plant trees, create bicycle paths and let the sun shine down on Causeway Street so you didn't feel like it wa midnight at 2pm...ok, that last one probably wasn't a priority of the Big Dig Team but, hey this is my blog post so they can....uhhhhm sorry, back to writing assignment!
The Big Dig Project is a very large reason my state's Highway system is severely lacking money to fix roads and bridges and pay the folks (who make an insane amount of money) to collect tolls at our many toll roads...it's not the only reason, but a very large contributing factor!! This is why a $3.50 tunnel charge is being raised to $7.00 and my state's lawmakers are going to add a gas tax to the already hefty amount that we pay to our state- to help raise the money needed to maintain our roads and bridges that they pissed away on the corrupt Big Dig Project. I am not being mean here, this is the truth! Many of the company's hired, or should I say the company's who submitted the lowest bids to the state for their work, have been sued for fraudulent and frivolous spending and biling. Folks around here joke that the ugly green tile that's in the Ted Williams Tunnel is probably also on the walls of half the construction worker's bathrooms....
Anyway, with the state's transportation budget in the shitter this past Sunday (Easter Sunday) has put residents here over the edge!!! There seems to have been a "sick-out" as the local news is calling it...instead of the worker's walking out on their jobs- they didn't show up!! An obscene amount of employees called in sick on Sunday, leaving our toll booths grossly understaffed and traffic jammed. Now, these toll collector's have been under scrutiny for years over their salaries on a regular day never mind a holiday that falls on a Sunday!
So here it is, Easter Sunday-we're grossly understaffed at our toll booths, traffic's jamming up, there's no money in the budget and the collector's are waving people through the tolls- waving them through!- as in "C'mon through ma'am, nope no payment necessary just go on through and have a nice day!"!!! Can you believe that?? I can't and neither can the folks in my area! It's been almost a week and it's still on the 5 o'clock news and in the 2 papers everyday!!!
If this was happening in your city or town, you'd be pissed too!

Wow...that sounds like a mess! I think I'd be pretty ticked, too! Stopping by from Mama Kat's WW.
Okay I have to comment b/c I HATE these tolls. We pay $3.50 twice per day (once for me to get to work, and once for Mike to get to work) 7 days per week (b/c Mike and I have alternate days off we use the tunnel daily). We spend about $49 per week on the toll thats a whopping $196.00 per month!
Did you do the per year math?? Ready for this? Wait for it - $2,352.00 per year!!! That is positively sickening!
We don't have that kind of that money, we're struggling just because of this toll. Inside the Callahan/Sumner tunnel you're lucky you can through without damaging your car! There are so many potholes, bumps, giant holes in the rode it is a disgrace!
Ok I'm done ranting, I just get very heated on this particular subject. You explained it PERFECTLY!!!
