Works for me Wednesday- Coupon Organizing System

One of the best things you can do to save money is to actually use all those coupons that you have!!  I don't know about you, but I used to spend hours cutting coupons and scouring the web for coupons on all the products I use then when it came time for checkout, I either forgot my coupons or realized that I forgot I had coupons for things I bought!!  That sure don't save any money, but it does annoy the hell out of me!!!

There's a few different ways you can set up your couponing system and you'll have to find what works best for you.  First, you have to organize and seperate your coupons.  You can do this in a variety of ways:

  • By Category- Seperate your breakfast foods, dairy, health & beauty, etc...within each category you can break it down further.  In your breakfast food category you can seperate cereals, frozen food items etc.  Health & Beauty can be broken down into shampoo's, makeup, toothpaste...you get the idea, right?

  • By Expiration Date-  Seperate your coupons by expire month and then by date, with the one's expiring soonest up front.

  • Sort Alphabetically- Bagels, Canned Goods, Cereals, Dairy etc.
Now that you have your coupons organized, let's talk about a way to store them all and make sure they make it to the supermarket with you!

Coupon System #1- Accordian File

You can buy an accordian file just about anywhere-CVS, Walgreens Target- and they come in a variety of sizes.  You'll have to choose what works for you.  I for instance, have such OCD that I can not stand when a larger coupon has to be folded (why aren't they all the same size anyway?!) so the longer type accordian file is better for me!  I prefer a fabric or plastic version just because they can take more abuse than the one's made from what feels like a file folder.

You can use each pocket to store your different categories (or expiration months)  but leave the first one empty for coupons you plan to use for your shopping trip!  One with tabs works best that way you can label each pocket and know what's in each one!

Coupon System #2- Coupon Binder

If you're a Coupon Queen, this system will probably work best for you.  You can purchase any type of binder you like, but one with a zipper will be most helpful.  You won't have to worry about coupons falling out and you can also hold other couponing supplies like scissors, a calculator and a pad of paper.  Zip it up, throw it in your bag and off you go!

You'll want to fill your binder with those plastic sheets that kids use for trading cards.  Fill the pockets with your coupons and then use tabbed binder dividers to sort even further!

Coupon System #3- Index File Box

Boxes are great and sturdy for storing coupons.  Try a recipe box or an index card box- you'd be surprised how much these little guys can hold!!!  Most index card boxes come with dividers or you can make your own out of old cereal boxes, just be sure that the dividers are tabbed you can easily label and see what's in each.

Now what good is all this organizing if you forget to use them??  Before you go shoppign write out your list and then go through all your coupons and see what you have.  Any item on your list that you have a coupon for be sure to mark it in some way (a big 'ole C for coupon, an asterick, a heart, whatever- just be sure you know you have a coupon for it!!!) so you don't buy it without using your coupon.

I always go through my soon to expire coupons just to see if there's anything that I normally buy but maybe don't need right this second but is worth it!  Make sure you don't buy it just because you have a coupon, that's not going to save you money!!  Also, some coupons are only good toward the purchase of multiple items so if your not going to use the item it's not worth saving the dollar when your throwing away something you paid $3.79 for!!!

It will take a little time at first to set up your couponing system and figure out what works best for you, but once you do- it'll become second nature.  You'll be saving money like a pro!!

Are you the crafty type??  Well then, check out this awesome tute for sewing a coupon clutch from The Object Project!!

Entertaining Tuesdays- Basic Tips for Your Summer Parties

Welcome to the first post in my new Entertaining Tuesday series!  With summer in full swing, most of us are spending more time in our yards and that means having friends over.  I'll be sharing tips for easy summer entertaining and recipes- maybe even a summer craft or two thrown in just for fun!!

Let's start with some basic tips for easy summer entertaining.

Pic from diylife.com
Start with seating for your guests ... make sure you've got plenty of comfortable places to sit and a large enough table. You can always place tables together if you need to and hide them under a fitted table cloth! The key is to make everyone feel like you were expecting them.  Since you'll be out in the sun all day make sure to have some shade like an umbrella, your guests that want to get out of the sun for a few will really appreciate it!!

For food, you can't go wrong with hot dogs, burgers and corn on the cob-grilled of course!!!  I always have a veggie tray with dip, chips and a few other nibblers for guests to snack on.  An ice bucket is a life saver-trust me!  It's nice to offer a variety of drinks, both alcoholic and non...set up a table as the bar with everything needed and let guests be their own mixologists.  Be sure to use shatter-proof glassware like these festive wine glasses from Target

Grab your iPod and make a playlist of fun summer songs or whatever you like.  And don't forget about games!  Who doesn't love a water balloon toss or horseshoes?!  If your feeling extra ambitious, you can set up an outdoor scavenger hunt!  You can find scavenger hunt lists and ideas here.

If your party's going past dark, don't forget some candles!  They create a relaxing atmosphere and if need be you can purchase the citronella ones to keep bugs away.  One of the greatest things to have for outdoor summer parties is a fire pit like this one, from Walmart.  It's so much fun to roast marshmellows and make s'mores at the end of the night!!

If you follow these simple tips you'll have a party that everyone will and enjoy!  There's nothing that says summer more than being outside, enjoying good food and great friends!!!

Be sure to come back next Tuesday for Easy Summer Recipes!!

Freezer Food Friday-Pork Tenderloin with Plum BBQ Sauce

It's my first week participating in Freezer Food Friday hosted by What A Crock!

My recipe comes from Rachael Ray, who I stalk love!!! I've made it a few times and each time is more delicious than the last! Enjoy!

Pork Tenderloin with Plum Barbecue Sauce
Serves 4

Ingredients:
•1/2 cup sugar
•1 cup water
•1 1-inch piece fresh ginger root, peeled and grated
•4 plums, sliced
•1 teaspoon five-spice powder
•1/2 lemon, juiced
•1/3 cup hoisin sauce
•2 pork tenderloins, silver skin removed
•Vegetable oil
•2 tablespoons grill seasoning
•1 tablespoon ground coriander

Preparation
Heat a grill pan, broiler or grill to high heat.

Heat the sugar and water in a medium size pot over medium-high heat. When the mixture reaches a bubble, reduce the heat to medium-low and add the ginger, plums and five-spice powder. Simmer for 10 minutes, then stir in the lemon juice. Remove from the heat and let cool for about 5 minutes. Add the plum mixture to a blender or food processor and process until smooth. Pour into a medium size bowl and stir in the hoisin sauce. Reserve.

While the plums are cooking, put the pork tenderloins on a sheet pan and coat with oil, grill seasoning and coriander. Grill, or broil 6 inches from the heat, until just firm, about 20-22 minutes. Remove from the grill to a cutting board and tent with foil. Let rest for about 5 minutes, then slice and arrange on a platter. Top with the plum barbecue sauce and serve.

Writer's Workshop: Good Mom Moment

So a few weeks ago I was having "one of those days" and was about to lose my mind!! This house can be detrimental to one's mental health (there'll be more on this later but the short story is that we live in a 3 family house surrounded by family! Yeah. Fun.) and it was happening to me!!

I was washing dishes and I can't remember if the phone rang, or someone knocked on the door or if it was Papa yelling from the hall- but I turned the faucett off, left the sink full of dirty dishes and bubbles and told Kass to grab her sandals. "We're gettin outta here", I told her and she was more than happy to oblige! See? Even my 3 year old needs a break from this house!!

We grabbed our bags and took the short walk to the train station. I still had NO IDEA what we were doing or where we were going but Kass was just happy to be riding the train. Seriously, I could spend $1.70 and ride the train all day and my kid would be happy! Screw the $5000 worth of toys in her room! I decided that if we got off in the center of Boston there had to be something we could find to do!! And we did...

Even though she's a little too young to understand the whole Freedom Trail, I figured we'd walk it and just see the sights and see what we could find to do. She loved looking up at all the skyscrapers and found it hilarious that the birdies lived up there too!! The city was swarming with people and she said hi to every one of them let me tell ya! She's so funny. I keep her around for the entertainment value alone!

We finally make our way to the Boston Commons and I figure we can't go wrong there considering there's a park the size of Rhode Island and the Frog Pond which is a huge water fountain and wading pool (in the winter they freeze it over and people can skate!). She saw the slide in the park and was off liek a rocket! There were a ton of people in the park and I figured it'd be good to give her a little space and let her play with some kids her own age. I sat close and kept a good eye on her because she can be a little bossy sometimes. From the top of the slide, she yelled, "Mama a pool!!". I figured she meant the Frog Pond so we took a walk over.

The Frog Pond was more crowded than the park so I kept her close especially since she's a splasher! She behaved herself pretty well and looked like a drowned rat by the time we were done! I of course forgot my camera in our quick escape from the house so I have no pics to share but we had a blast. She put up a little fight when it was time to leave so I threatened to never visit Boston again and we were on our way home.

As we were walking back to the train station I asked Kassie if she had a good time and she said that she "had fun fun fun fun fun." I'll take that as a yes! She was walking a little ahead of me, chasing pigeons as usual, and suddenly turned back, ran at me and grabbed my hand to walk next to me. She looked up at me and said "Thank you mama for our trip to Boston. Your my best friend."

I'm her best friend. Yeah, it made me all warm and fuzzy too!

31DBBB Challenge-Day2: List Post

Day 2 of the 31 Days to Build a Better Blog Challenge has us writing a list post, which is right up my alley!!  I'm all about lists! I seriously have a list for almost everything.  I live and breath for checklists.

8 Ways to Make Your Mornings Less Hectic

  1. Get your coffee ready the night before.  A coffee maker with an auto start timer is priceless!!  If your a tea drinker- set out your cup with teabag in place and fill your kettle.
  2. Know what your making for breakfast.  Nothing eats up time in the a.m. like taking breakfast orders from a house full of people as if you were a diner waitress!
  3. Have the next day's lunches packed and ready to go.
  4. Lay out all clothes and accessories for the next day.  Ironing first thing in the morning is a sure fire way to get your day off to a sucky start!!  *Bonus Tip: Watch the weather for tomorrow.  If rains in the forecast, take out the umbrellas and place by the door (or any other items you use for crazy weather days) so your not searching for it or forget it!!
  5. Go over your next day's To Do List with the family.  Make sure everyone knows what's going on so there's no surprises!
  6. Have all totebags, backpacks, diaper bags, briefcases etc packed for the next day.  Going to the gym?  Clothes are already packed!  Kid's going to the library after school?  Library card's in there.
  7. Empty out your dishwasher before bed.  Any dishes and utensils used for breakfast get loaded in and now when you come home your not greeted by a sink full of dishes.
  8. Set your alarm 15 minutes earlier than usual.  You might think that the 15 minutes is better spent sleeping but it can make all the difference when trying to get the whole family out the door.  On time.

You can thank me tomorrow morning!

31DBBB Challenge-Day 1: Elevator Pitch

The challenge is to create an elevator pitch for your blog.  Day 1 and I'm already screwed!

1.What is your short elevator pitch?

My blog is to share tips, tricks, links-anything I find that could make a SAHM's life a little easier.

2.Did completing this task change your blog, or change the way you think about your blog?

Well I guess so because now I realize that my blog's kinda all over the place.  I mean, I wanna share my stories and share the things that I love-being a mom and wife, crafts, cooking- all that stuff!  I think I'm gonna have to do a little organizing around here and make some posts weekly series...or something!

7 Link Challenge from ProBlogger

As usual, I'm a day late and a dollar short (or in this case a few days late and a dollar short!)...the other day ProBlogger posted a 7 Link Challenge.  Check it out and join in (hey I'm late too and I knew about it! LOL)

1. Your first post- My first post was written in July of 2008 and titled A Day at the Aquarium...it pretty m,uch summed up a family outing with lots of pics (which I have to fix cuz they're coming up as moved or corrupt?!?)!

2. A post you enjoyed writing the most- Would have to be for one of the weekly meme's I do with Mama Kat titled My (perfect) Weekly Writing Assignment. It really was a perfect assignment because we were given prompts to follow and in this particular week it just clicked!!

3. A post which had alot of discussion- hmmm....to be perfectly honest I don't think any of my posts have inspired discussions (hence, one of the reasons I want to Build A Better Blog LOL!!!)...so mayne I should rename this post my 6 Link Challenge!!  LOL

4. A post on someone else's blog you wish you had written-  Good heaven's this could be limitless but I guess I'll have to choose.....Mama Kat's (of course!! She was the first blog I ever followed- and for VERY good reason!!)  How To Make Real Life Friends With Your Favorite Blogger .  Kat is hilarious!  She says things that other people would only think, she constantly puts her life (and flaws) out there, she's genuinely funny and she's smart.  Yeah, I think I have a blog crush on Mama Kat!

5. Your most helpful post- I think it would have to be my "series" (if you could call it that!) for Spring Cleaning!  I wrote 5 posts over a week and categorized them into different rooms to be cleaned.  There was the intro It's Spring Cleaning Time!, The Kitchen, The Bathroom, The Bedroom and a double post (guess it was supposed to be a 6 part series!) Get Organized/Laundry.

6. A post with a title you are proud of- Wow! I'm looking through the titles of my posts and they suck! I guess my pick would be My head's in the oven just cuz it was a cute title for a post about all the things i had been cooking!

7. A post that you wish more people had read- Easy. Hope begins with you and me...it was a post concerning breast cancer and the walk  my friends and I were doing.  There was a link to make a donation and a possibilty to raise a lot of money!

Writer's Workshop: Are your medicenes fake??

*Choose a headline from the Today Show and write an opinion piece*

We all know about the very large market of counterfiet accessories such as handbags, watches and sunglasses.  But did you know that your kids cough medicene could be fake??

According to a segment which aired on the Today Show on July 14, it's a real possibility!  Counterfieter's aren't just making wallets and watches anymore, they're making your christmas lights and cholesterol medicene!!

According to the Today report, last year drug compay Pfizer confiscated 100 million doses of knockoff meds.  I understand the whole "the company loses money" and "copyright infringement" thing when you buy a counterfiet bag, but c'mon- who's really getting hurt?  Now when the cholesterol pill your supposed to take everyday is a fake or the botox injection you get is counterfiet someone really could get hurt, like the couple who just one day after getting knockoff botox injections ended up in the hospital on ventilators!!!

I think it is absolutely appaling that the counterfiet industry has expanded into our everyday lives.  As a $600 Billiion business, I doubt there's many consciences.  Though there should be.  How can you live with yourself knowing you've created and distributed something that could possibly kill someone?!?  Nevermind that heaven only knows what these things are made out of but what about the effects of a condition going untreated while you think your taking care of yourself?

Some poor person sufferign from high cholesterol wakes up everyday and takes their meds, watches what they eat and gets a little exercise to help improve their health and these asshole counterfieters are taking days off this person's life because the fake cholesterol pill they produced!!!

Now along with all the other worries that a parent has, we have to worry if our baby formula is fake??  We have to sleep at night worrying if the Christmas lights we bought are going to spark and catch fire- to our entire house?!  I have to worry if my hairdryer is gonna burst into flames?!  You got to be kiding me!!  Like we don't have enough to worry about these days with food and gas prices on the rise, people being laid off and companies shutting down...you add worrying if the cough syrup you gave your kid is gonna get rid of the cough or land them in a hospital.

Thanks alot assholes...why don't you just stick to the fake bags, wallets, sunglasses and watches that we all love??

If you'd like to watch the Today Show segment, you can HERE.

It's been a loooong time since I've joined in the fun of Mama Kat's Writer's Workshop...hop over, check it out and join in the fun!

I thank heaven's everyday for my daily email from TipNut for all the amazing sewing, crocheting and just plain old crafty tips they've got!! I've decided to share my "upcoming projects" folder with you and I'm sure you'll add a few to yours!

This is the Fun and Pretty Totebag for crocheter's from Attic24, which is a blog I'm now following! The colors on this bag are beautiful, but could be changed to any you like soooo easily! The bottom of the bag is crocheted in the round then once you get the size you want, double-crochet rows up the body of the bag. Top off with a shell edging and you've got yourself a brand new take everywhere tote!
There's a Sunscape Throw from Naturally Caron that is beautiful!!! Again, colors easily changeable to whatever you prefer.

To satisfy my sewing addiction this adorable Mini Makeup Roll fits the bill! Its from the very talented and crafty KellyRachel.com. I think its the perfect way to pack your makeup for a weekend trip, or even to keep organized in your purse.

Nothing changes the look of your bedroom like new pillows! Just some fabric, your sewing machine and a little bit of time and you can totally transform the look of your room with these beautiful Pretty & Quick Pillowcases from Film in the Fridge.

There's nothing I love to do more on a rainy day like today than taking over the kitchen table with craft stuff!! I can sit for hours and just make stuff. Kass loves pinwheels and Style Me Pretty has a super cute (and easy) tutorial!! You can find the template download here.

With all my scrapping supplies, I am up to my elbows in patterned paper!! How About Orange has an envelope template that you can use to make these adorable envelopes out of patterned papers.

Since How About Orange is quickly becoming one of my fave blogs to read, you should definately check it out! You'll find these absolutely amazing free printable bookplates, free printable invites and free printable cd cases!!

I'm sure my upcoming projects folder will continue to grow, so I'll keep sharing my finds with you! If you have a fave website or blog that always gets you inspired, feel free to share it here!

The Bedtime Battle

I have no idea what caused it, but a few months ago when my daughter turned 3, she decided that she no longer needed to sleep at night!  She had already given up a "real" afternoon nap about 6 months before that, so what gives??  Isn't she exhausted?  The kid doesn't stand still during the day- how can she not pass right out?  Trust me, she does not.

Every night in my house a battle is fought and she's definitely coming out on top!  I get her ready for bed and by the time we're done picking up her room, brushing teeth and pottying and she's generally laying down by 9pm.  My daughter hasn't fallen asleep before midnight in almost 4 months!!

Every 10-20 minutes she gets up saying she's gonna pee her pants and has to use the potty.  Just getting to the potty takes her 7 minutes because she's suddenly interested in everything around her from the lip gloss on my dresser to the car's music outside.  Once she's done I know have to actually get her back in bed!  She runs immediately to mine and says, "No!  I wanna sleep in your bed!!".  When I tell her she can't, I then spend the next few minutes chasing her back to her room where  more than once I've had to resort to the "1...2...3!" to get her back in her bed!!  From there she whines that she's not tired or her leg hurts (and yet doesn't believe me that actually laying down and not running around will make it feel better!!) or she doesn't want to sleep because she only wants to rest!!!

Usually after about 2 hours of this is when she's gotten so overtired that she turns downright defiant and will scream and cry that she's not sleeping and stomp her way into my room to tell me that rather loudly and rather close to my ear!!  This kid is persistent if nothing else let me tell ya!  She will repeat the same sentence over and over and over again through her tears, sweat, snots and drool and positively will NOT give up!!

I decided to do some research to see if I could find any reasons for the sudden change in her sleep habits and also to find a few ideas to help win a battle or two!  I've decided to share what I've found out so that if you or someone you know is having the same bedtime battle, I may be able to stop a few gray hairs!!

Here's a few things I found out about toddlers and sleep from a CBS Early Show story on cbsnews.com called Getting Kids to Sleep.

  • Toddlers need about 12-14 hours of sleep in a 24-hour period.
  • When they reach about 18 months of age their nap times will decrease to once a day lasting about one to three hours.
  • Many toddlers experience sleep problems including resisting going to bed and nighttime awakenings.
  • Nighttime fears and nightmares are also common. Many factors can lead to sleep problems.
Be sure to head over to cbsnews.com and read the Getting Kids to Sleep story for more info on other age groups!

Most of what I've found has told me that I need to have a bedtime routine-which I thought I had, but apparently not!  Article after article (like this one from parenting.org or even this one from keepkidshealthy.com) says have a snack, put jammies on, brush teeth, use the potty, read a book...check, check, check check and check!  Now what?  The "after bedtime" suggestions from the parenting.org article are the suggestions I'm gonna have to give a whirl because I don't think I do a single one!!

For a few other ideas, be sure to check out the modernmom YouTube video Getting Your Kids to Sleep.  It's worth a click of the subscription button to have access to Brooke Burke and a group of mom's talking about every topic you could ever think of!!  It's like having your girls over for coffee in your living room with all the different opinions and points of view!  You will most definitely walk away with something new, maybe even a recipe!!

Lastly, for a sometimes unconventional approach, DrGreene.com is a site I always end up at when I've got a kiddo problem.  He's a world renowned Pediatrician and author and you can check out all his creds here.  Dr. Greene has an interesting idea that I'd like to give a try.  Read all about his bedtime pass program and see if it's something that you think might work!

Well the new bedtime routine will start tomorrow night and I'll be sure to post about the progress!  If your battling (or have battled and come out victorious) at bedtime too, share what tips and tricks you use or any sites you found to be life savers!

To those of us who fight tirelessly night after night, nearly losing life and limb...may the force be with you!! *OK, now-as you can see-I must be delirious and sleep deprived myself!!*

One of my more popular (and favorite) posts was my Pumpkin Cheesecake recipe.

My favorite peep of the week is...Life, Kids & Kitchen.  It's a great read and it has drastically added to my recipe box!!

Who's yours?  Be sure to check out a new "peep" post and link up here (you'll find all the rules too!)
